Vistulamouth Fortress is a complex of fortifications from 15th century. The site had a strategic importance to control the traffic of ship moving into and out of harbours. It is one of Europe’s most interesting and valuable examples of costal defense architecture.
If you climb up a brick Lighthouse Tower (just 126 steps!), you will be rewarded with a magnificent view. From the top, the view of the fortress complex, Gdansk Bay, shipyards and harbour takes the breath away. In good weather you can see as far as the Hel Peninsula.
Inside the Commandant’s House there is a collection of weaponry and everyday items like jewellery, toys and decorations. But the Fortress is not only about history. The fort and the surrounding area are also winter home for bats.
On a tiny peninsula the first shots of World War II were fired. The Nazi German battleship Schleswig-Holstein without warning opened fire on the Polish garrison.
Today, an outdoor museum with a walkable exhibition. We can walk through the ruins of the defenders’ barracks and guardhouses, massive monument to the site called “A Monument to the Defenders of the Coast” and a large sign stands next to the monument reads “Nigdy Więcej Wojny”: War Never Again.
